My thinking is that the guy with a hole in his lung thought mr FREAK was married or at least it bothered him that he wore a ring at all. He wasn’t wearing the ring on his wedding band finger but to the smaller guy he probably deluded himself into jealousy thinking he was married. The fact that he put the ring on him after they slept together just is so romantic as if it was meant for him all along. LOVE THIS so much.
