Reminds me of the anime “Stars Align”, it’s primarily about tennis/friendship/general struggles, but mc has an abusive dad & his friend tries to help and comfort him but near the end mc buys a kitchen knife and stands outside his fathers apartment with the knife, in which its left on a cliffhanger there

So I don’t remember the title nor a lot of the story for the life of me but I remember that it was about this two boys and one of them had a SUPER abusive father and pretty much never felt love and comfort them the other one was like super sweet with the guy and when he found that that his dad was abusive wanted to help him and (I think) tried to kill his dad.
