The only think Joseph has in his favor that he never enforce or expect anything from Ian. He is created to be different from TJ. Yes, since they have a long-standing relationship of 19 years. That's why they have such chemistry compared to Joseph with Ian. The differences between both relationship are portrayed very realistically since the author said this is a realistic story where the characters are very humanly.
