Since you're here, I will assume that you are a fan of Yaoi, and as a Yaoi reader, you should also know the origin and history of the genre and it's core purpose; however, based on your comment, I'll take a guess and infer that you are in fact ignorant of what Yaoi is; so let me do my charity of the day and enlighten you. Since Yaoi is a genre written by women for women to satisfy various female desires (sexual and non-sexual) and/or psychological (or emotional) needs, of which at the core is the fantasy of being romanced and seduced by a gorgeous (preferably alpha) male, aesthetics, then, becomes a structural necessity; and when you add erotic female sexual fantasies, then it explains why beauty and attractiveness are iconic aspects of the genre. Let me put it simply, just in case. Yaoi caters to various women romantic (emotional) and sexual needs (fantasies), therefore, we want the characters to be attractive, gorgeous, beautiful, perfect, otherwise it ruins the fantasy. We don't want the unappealing facts of life to disrupt the fantasy. Now, if you are the type of person that fantasizes with unattractive or hideous characters, then that's your prerogative; but that's not how the female mind typically works, and Yaoi is made for the female mind.
