Anime is okay compared to the manga.
The manga became my favorite of all time (the art style becomes amazing starting 3rd volume). The plot is more developed, there are so many context scenes that show characters in different light. It's good, really really good. + There are extras that add a lot to the story. Highly recommend
AND You can read Yasha and California Monogatari when you are done with it. They are their own stories, yet they are interconnected. (Or read the in chronological order
1. California Monogatari
2. Banana fish + extras(Private Opinion is not on mangago)
3. Yasha
4. Eve no Nemuri

THEY are all soul killing and develop on idea of soulmates.
Yet banana fish stuck the most to me and because the only one I cried over.
I NEED SADD manga/hua/hwa's, I need something to make me cry and crush my heart but also has a really good plot (it can be romance or doesn't have to be, just need smth to cry to)
