In his sick and weird way, yes. But to me it more looks like Max is object of his obsession to the point where he got lost in his sick fantasies. Everything he has ever done was in order to possess Max but Max was always just a bit further from the tips of his fingers, like something divine. (Not romantising it, it jus seems like that type of obsession. Whatever he do or wherever he looks he's seeing that object of his (very gross) desires).
