Oushi

I thought I'd hate him because people shit on him a lot and called him a red flag but reading the manga Im like ??? He's not a bad guy at all??? It's funny because all the characters pick up on it and even Yuki, but a lot of people trash on his character. It's funny bcuz the comment below it says a lot of people praise him but I'm on the opposite side where a lot of people hate him.

I always thought while reading this manga that he reminds me of a mom, and it's nice this manga is SO self aware because his best friends comment on it too. Oushi is not a bad person, he's actually very harmless

REAL. I personally don't ship him with Yuki, but I can respect his character. He's just a very realistic character with flaws and I love those type of characters that FEEL human.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. I'm also not shipping him with Yuki but he's a good supporting character and I actually hope he finds someone.

    Harmless?

I understand why Oushi's character can seem harmless or sympathetic on the surface, especially when contrasted with more overtly aggressive second male leads. However, when his behaviors are analyzed more closely in context, they are not “harmless.” His ableism and desire to "protect" the female lead due to her disability removes her autonomy. Regardless of his intent, this impulse to control comes from a deeply problematic mindset. Forcing his confession on her against her clear discomfort and boundaries is still a bit manipulative, even if not as aggressive as some other love interests. He disregards consent. And his jealousy and entitlement to her attention is not harmless. Unrequited feelings do not justify policing her choices or demanding reciprocation. And his infantilization of Yuki and deaf people in general. While he may not seem a "bad person" at first glance, his actions show very real issues around power and control in relationships. While not a villain, Oushi displays entitled behaviors that mirror instances of men pressuring women despite rejection and discomfort. He is not harmless.

I understand feeling that Oushi seems nice on the surface, but his specific actions towards Yuki contradict that. Simply calling him "respectful" and "considerate" doesn't align with how he actually treats her. He persistently pursues Yuki despite her lack of interest - that's not respectful of her consent. Grabbing her wrist to stop her from defending Itsuomi just because of his feelings- is a clear violation of respect and consent. That's an entitled, inappropriate escalation. Especially when it’s her way of communicating. Regardless of seeming like a nice person overall, his treatment of Yuki specifically involves repeated boundary crossing and lack of care for her consent. That's why readers critique him - his actions towards the female protagonist are rightfully called out as problematic and concerning attitudes that reflect entitlement. So while wanting to see the good in him is understandable, it doesn't negate the critiques of his behavior based on his actual treatment of Yuki. His actions matter more than his intentions in assessing if he is truly respectful, considerate and relationship material for the Yuki. Which, he isn’t.
