So I found the novel and it does have more stuff in it that the webcomic skipped over. So if you feel like the story is rushed, it's because they took out quite of bit of stuff and things that weren't entirely explained properly were explained in the novel like what was the importance of the orbs in the forest and why the Princess wouldn't be able to beat Lucy without Ed's help.
Yeah, it happens, as long as there is a well-understood plot with context as to the why where, what, and how the story progressed it won't be discarded by readers. Especially if there was someone to explain as to why the pace feels like it is too fast, like you!
