Yeap, that was literally my first thought when they mentioned a black mage, like just lie and say "I was actually planning on leaving to search for the black mage that can save me, who's body is under a seal right now" and now you have basically an army helping you do your mission. And since the dragon is going to stop the whole coughing blood thing, you're not really lying
