The mc's desire for flight and the ml's tattoos are both allegories for hope and rebirth. Hope for dreams to realize (for mc), and rebirthing to a better life (for ml).
The birds were honestly kinda off, but I think it's because most of the implications was lost in cultural differences and the translation work
