If you go to the LightNovelPub you can go read obviously the Novel which has way more detail but there’s a 44 chapter preview to the main story line and it Riftan’s life leading up to the MSL you can find out a lot about Riftan and why the way he is

Riftan is 100% reasonable for his concern and refusal of letting Maxi join the campaign. Maxi is:
1. rather on the frail side,
2. no combat knowledge
3.physical combat skills
While we admire growth, but really? Joining most dangerous campaign currently, that's the choice?
