Johnny lied about his whole past, saying his mom got sick 3 years ago and he was stealing medicine for her when in reality his mom had already been dead for 10 years. And because Calahan is a sweet angel baby he sent someone with a note for Johnny’s “sick mom” to let her know her son is alive. But when the messenger got there they found her 10 year old grave instead.

So on that part I think what Calahan said is correct, at least that’s my best guess, he said he thinks Johnny was scamming people for money to buy medicine for his mom 10 years ago, then killed the doctor after his mom died, and has been in hiding ever since, and that’s why nobody heard from “Johnny the scammer” for so many years.
