The shaman didn’t want to be alone/without the king anymore bc he realized he loved him back, so he decided to try purifying the king’s soul or some shit and by doing so he died. Purification doesn’t revive the king but it allowed him to reincarnate, just like when the shaman (in his previous life) atoned for his sins and was freed from the spirit realm. Then they were reborn as the students.

The past life of the shaman wished to be again with the king. Eventually, he took over the body of the shaman and then that body died and now the two of them are together as wandering ghosts. I feel sorry for the shaman, he was practically cursed and died.
But shaman was the reincarnation.. same soul.. right?
