I'm also confused about what gender the child actually is. At first it looks like a boy but at the end it looks like a girl.
I think it's all due to translation error. It's my third or fifth time reading this and I still get confused every time. As much as they put a lot of effort into translating this into English, they are bound to get some things wrong.
