Why do they always have to make the Japanese the bad/sneaky guys??? (No, this is not a prompt for a history lesson I'm just freaking tired of seeing Japanese character in Manhwa and immediately knowing they are not to be trusted because the plot will make them sneaky in some way or another)

    Precisely bcs historical reasons ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
Koreans, most of the older generations, don't like Japanese. The more new generations like Gen Z and Alpha X, are mostly okayish with it, not all of them, but well.

So yeah, then you get lots of manhwas with Japanese being the bad guys. I expect it whenever I'm reading a web novel or a manhwa

I get you it's really cliche and annoying fr they bring their country past problems into every story feels like a forced propaganda every time I read it lol

Its embedded in history, and also, Japan never apologized for what they did to Korea and especially their women. So yeah, the grudge goes deep

Hmm no country ever apologise and war crimes always were there I rarely see a manga have American hate after getting nuked twice it's not like Korea is the only country with past but they kinda the only one that brings it up alot in every situations at this point it's a bit racist tbh it's not like new generation did those things that their people constantly portrait like this (if you watch attack on titan it has a big part that says how wrong is to blame the new generation for people of past wrong doings)

Meh I mean aren't all we? But we don't make it that obvious like every part of middle East has problems with other parts but they don't constantly bring it up that's why nobody knows but some reading in manhwas just shows whose country they have problems with lol that's a new lvl of petty tbh

Japan apologised several times to Korea, and Asia in general as well. They even made it a point to apologise to Korean women. Korea never accepted their apologies and quite frankly that's on their own right. But at some point you need to set a boundary are you are just going to let this hate seep into everything

You see, we have those with our neighbouring countries, and at first I thought of that. But at this point it just goes beyond that.

Regarding the nukes, it's more because in Japan those events are more ssen like FAFO events than something a country did to them. The Hiroshima museum is specially illustrative on this POV. But yeah, I agree with you. They keep blaming newer generations for actions and decisions of people that at this point is, if not already dead, quite near it. They keep the stereotypes and hate alive, and that only reflect in the people alive today that had nothing to with something that happened 80 years ago.

What do you mean petty? People that aren't even korean here are commenting on whether they think their feelings are valid. You also bring up attack on titan and the new generation not having participated in those actions... korea, china, and many other countries have asked for reparations. This isn't an old thing, it's still an issue to this day. I'm not saying you can't dislike a character being one dimensional but some of you are here diminishing real events.

Japan refused to pay reparations because they knew it would allow other Asian countries to ask for the same thing. They refuse to educate their people about their own past and have a history of excluding that information from textbooks. So you can see why Korea questioned the sincerity of that apology right? You say they're keeping the hate alive, but this ignores any historical context or Japan's own place in this situation.

Again, I don't care if you just want less predictable and one dimensional characters (thats always a fair critique), but some of you guys choose to insert your own opinions about historical events many of you dont really know about.

This is what I meant. Also, Japan's victims, Korea's grandmothers, are still alive to this day. There are already documentations about them and their horrid experiences. Japan may be alright now but that doesn't erase their history. And it's especially not up to us, people that are not even from a Korean descent, to tell Korea to stop being 'petty' and move on. We should stop desensitizing war crimes, its a real thing and not just texts in books. People have been tortured and killed, and that is still happening to this day with countries such as Palestine and Congo.

I understand that you lack the emotional intelligence to comprehend the experiences of terrorized countries, but just because its the past shouldn't mean that the people should forget. Of course Koreans and Japanese people do get along well (Solo leveling is currently being animated by Japan, dubbed with Japanese VA's too), its mostly the government that cannot acknowledge their own history and doesn't teach the new generation of their past. Just because other countries don't apologize for their own war crimes, doesn't mean we should tolerate it either. The world are already rallying for the active genocide of Palestine because people are dying, worse, tortured. Its not really rocket science to understand how that is wrong and should never be forgotten.

For one watch your mouth and answer respectfully for one I was talking about a manhwa not how people should react to history they're feelings are valid about that historical event I said make a Japanese trash cliche is really doesn't have any reason to cause most of these guys portrait young means they didn't have anything towards war and all basically trash a whole race cause some of their grandparents were trash is invalid and how ongoing war in Palestine came to the chat? you just say anything to make a what point?! If you are an emotional person without a power to have a convo without getting snapped that's on you I simply am unsatisfied about the Japanese character presentation not who's right or wrong in history and don't reply to me

I mean, you have to consider that there still /are/ people alive from that time. In retrospective (I'm 22 yo), my own grandma was a child when the WW2 occured, the eldest brother of my mother was a born when the Korean War happened. You can't just expect them to not be resentful considering the oldest members of their own families happened through the worst parts of not one but two wars.

Japan did lots of horrible things to Koreans, they said "well that happened" and that was it. Comfort women, unit 731, the korean war (bcs yeah the whole reason there was a civil war has its roots in, once again, Japan occupation in Korea for decades and forcing koreans to become pretty much defenseless to the US and USSR later occupation of the country) and the list can go on.

You can't expect them to pretend it didn't happen or not feel anything about it. Above all, none, except koreans themselves, are in no place to assume how koreans /should/ feel.

Though I do understand how you feel because I pretty much can expect the characterization of japanese in the bad guys whenever they are presented in a work (novel, manhwa, etc). I do believe it has become a cliché more than anything else. Maybe in that way they can gain some favor among Korean readers who dislike/hate japanese (my bold assumption). I would like to know the opinion of Korean readers that come across the overly used trope of japanese being the bad guys.
Maybe that way we could then understand /why/ they keep using that trope, after all, the main consumers and buyers are koreans themselves.

You're literally desensitizing war crimes and not fully understanding the root of Koreans vs Japanese characters in manhwas. Palestine was an example of how grotesque 'wars' actually are, and that people are actively protesting against it because its fucked up. And I didn't curse at you, but if you felt degraded instead of reflecting as to why what you said is inhumanly wrong, thats your problem. I'm not being emotional, I'm being rational. Learn to practice empathy and comprehension, those are basic skills for reading.

    Natuchipss February 2, 2024 2:04 pm

Like I said, you have to put in retrospective facts like, my grandma was a child when WW2 happened. Newer generations are okayish with the whole japan-korea thing (war, occupation, transgressions against human rights, etc), but I mean, I'm 22 yo, you could think that I were korean, my grandmother would have had to go through all those terrible things. Is not easy to say "well is in the past" when is still an issue to them, you can't tell victims how to feel.

I do think the trope (japanese being the bad guys) is overly used and is predictable. But well, what can I do, I don't write the stories
