I've never been against translations especially since English isn't my first language and I always relied on translations (even the illegal ones that would publish a book but make the title very different from the og one) so i think it would be fine to make money, I've seen some people already do it, translate a manga and put it on their patreon

Well for me, i feel like scan groups should be nonprofit lolol i mean, they make their content based of off stealing someones work, its ok to put up kofi links or donation links to support your scan group and the translations, but i... Honestly dont think some should limit their translated chapters onto sites like patreons where you have to be member to get access of the translations, i think its just wrong to do that...? Because aren't you basically reposting another artists work, THEIR INCOME, and making money off of it?? its not like translation isnt a job, but more like... Youre also kind of stealing the money from another person's job??

Scan groups, in my opinion, should always be nonprofit and provide translations for medias without ones, for example, shoujo, bl/gl or lgbtq+ mangas often don't get translated, so i really respect those who go out of their way to translate them for the rest of us, which is why i think donations are ok!!

Well, most scan teams are non profit and someone in them does pay for the content they are translating. Having a patreon for earlier releases does not seem too bad. The big thing is now Korean webtoons and entire scan teams have websites that pump out material without a paywall. They get paid firstly via ads and then by people sending extras like ko-fi and the like. The higher rankers are websites like mgg (where we are right now) - mgg steals from EVERYONE and also has people adding to it's libraries for free. A decade ago, when this site was much smaller, it made $200k usd per month... nowadays it is almost impossible to check how much it makes, but you can add at least a 0 to that... so, no let the little scan groups make their coin. It is all pennies in the end compared to monsters like this place.

Okay, so to make a much shorter answer -
MGG sells our info via IP location, email, and similar. They are aware of how long we are on the site and how many clicks we do, so that is sold as info as well. You might not see ads on the actual mgg site, but you will get (and have been getting, probably without realizing it) ads that might target you or the opposite (it depends on the company your info was sold off to). Also, you might be getting strange texts like a package in the post office is missing something, click this, etc, and that could be from sold info. Even though we did not give our numbers, it is easy to find with the info that mgg does have just from a person clicking on the site. So, even though you are not asked to pay up front, you ARE paying in the long term. You are inadvertantly selling your personal information. It is how all these sites work. To try to stop that, use a good (not free) VPN and ad blockers, including ones that explain what they are blocking. MGG is very expensive to run, so never fall into the naive trap that it is run out of the goodness of someone's heart. It is a highly profitable business.

Ahh the ads you get would be in your email and/ or text messages. Not on the site. Ads on the site are just, currently, for those that are not logged on.

I use NordPass, it is less than 1.50 a month, so I did the 2 year plan. Also use 3 ad blockers... though those depend on what browser you use. I'm planning on changing my main browsers to arc and chrome. currently firefox and chrome.
