Ok, so Jane is a normal woman who has been cursed in her last life being accused of witchcraft as a child. So she was burned and saved by the father priest. Who basically took care of her til adulthood. She now works at Ian's estate hired as Ayli's/Alice's personal caretaker/teacher.
However, the real story is basically that Ayli is a real witch. She was stuck in her juvenile state due to the lack of mother figure and parental care. Once Jane showed up and gave her the attentive care Ayli needed, Ayli basically went through an extremely fast growth. At the age where she should be alongside Ian.
If you recall, Ian was only a few years older than Ayli in the past when Isabella was still alive. So now Ayli has grown to her actual age.
And because Ayli reached adulthood, she now is challenged by her own power she never learn to use. Which is what the story is currently exploring. Ayli being born a witch, Ayli being the incarnation of her mother Isabella. And Ayli discovering her history of her real identity. She was basically sacrificed by her mother to become another witch, inheriting her mother's power.
