I think they mean that she can do the most basic thing anyone could: become close to the kid by being nice and taking care of him. She said it herself that she doesn’t wanna get closer because she’s afraid that will change the story. That’s pretty much it, which is a dumb fear.
Another FL that is dead set on allowing the story to progress because for some illogical reason she cannot change it "just because".
