We is a bit much, ain't it? I just personally dislike parents as a plot device, though it seems that the author might take a different approach to it, it's still hard to empathize with their situation when they're just background characters with an important title, plus it bothers me that of them got deathly sick and the kid is still completely fine but at this point I'm just nitpicking
I read a shady wady vietnamese or something version of chapter 17 and his parents are indeed dead
