I just finished it, I remember Riftan saying about being "abandoned" by her. She just left him. She wants to help her husband as you say, but she seriously needs to communicate and also understands Riftan's wishes. Riftan may not also be as good in communicating but seriously leaving him just like that is totally unacceptable.
