If you notice the date in the story it’s February 11th right now, Ash is planning a surprise gift for Lyle’s on February 14th (Valentine’s Day) but it didn’t go as plan because his REAL rut will happen on Valentine’s day. All these pheromones, actions, and what he says now is due to his pre-rut symptoms only. It’s only after his rut end that he is back to his right mind and give lyle the gift. (which is a key house engrave with lyle’s name; asking him to move in with him).
