I think fantasy is a big part of it. In yaoi all of the fucked up semes eventually apologize and try to do right and that doesn't really happen in real life so people read it and like it because it lets them experience what they want but would likely never happen? When the characters are all fucked up and don't change a lot of people do speak out. But also, a lot of people relate. Not everyone is morally clean and everyone has made mistakes in the past so in yaoi they really just see bits and pieces of human psychology etc, it's not really about undue romanticism, it's just how it is. Life, relationships etc are messy, yaoi helps people work through them.
Women get objectified all the time. What's your point?
I understand you so hard right now.
I usually look for stories where consent is given, as in Ten Count (I am certain it was consensual, but now I am realizing I cannot recalled a yes being given), Escaped Journey (there is a rape, but they both know it is rape and there is an apology...I believe) and more.
As someone that hates raped, romanticization of pedophilia, it gets trying sometimes finding a good manga to read.
because that's the point in most yaoi. not all boys look like pretty flowers in real life. there's nothing real about. the only reason they start to look horrible is because you're looking at them from a real life point of view. you're not supposed to do that. some yaois are supposed to be looked at like that, but most are not. the only reason they became horrible is because you started looking at them differently. real life doesn't apply to most yaoi.
OMG you're right! Look at all the cases of people reading yaoi and then going out and INSISTING on being raped because it's so romantic. Oh wait! That never happens! You know why? Because people aren't morons like you. These are stories. Stories are metaphors, not reality. Humans have worked out their feelings via fiction since they crawled out of the slime. Fiction is a safe place to explore all aspects of humanity, even the darkest. And a safe place to leave those feelings without carrying them into real life.
And what the hell with saying how glad you are that you stopped reading "that kind of stuff" when you just admitted you still read it?
Most of us are smart enough to differentiate fiction from reality. Porn objectifies both women and men, but humans are still going to continue watching it because wanting to titillate one aspect of our fantasies is completely normal. Most people understand that yaoi/yuri/porn is escapist fiction, not reality. I don't condone rape under any circumstance, and reading rapey stories certainly doesn't mean that I do.
And that's why I like to read mangas, where you and characters know that it was rape and it's fucked up. If I want to read a nice romantic story, I read a manga where both of partners wanted to have sex.
And yes, I still read mangas where rape looks like it's okay and there is not an apology afterwards. However, I like to read yaoi, and if I want to read lots of yaoi I have to read these ones too. Actually, when I think about it in the most popular yaoi mangas there is some kind of rape. Hidoku Shinaide, Junjou Romantica (Misaki/Usami - i still consider it somehow rape), Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Viewfinder, Koisuru Boukun.... And I can continue. But we still read it, because we are used to it. Most of us started with yaois, where uke says "no" but the seme continues. I don't like it and I am thinking about this issue more and more. And even after rethinking this topic, I can't stop reading it and enjoying it. I feel guilty :/
If you compare it to porn, I would say it's about the same in regards to objectifying, no consent, rape, etc. and also the comments of the viewer. I agree with the others that it's fantasy and an outlet to play around with whatever interests the author has.
But I wouldn't say it's absolutely harmless, if you read about something (no matter what) all the time in a way that describes it as something normal or not so bad after all, you might start to unconsciously adopt this opinion to a certain degree.
Btw there was a question recently asking what we didn't like in yaoi mangas, and next to shota/femine-looking uke, rape und especially falling in love after rape was one of the most commonly listed things, so I think you're perception of the genre and its readers might not be absolutely accurate.
Here is the link to the above mentioned question: http://www.mangago.zone/thing/about/2319/?filter=date
smart people can differentiate reality to fantasy. if i don't like something, i won't read it. i don't like incest, i don't read it. i don't like shotacon, i don't read it. i don't like rape, i won't read it. i won't bash people who read those things tho. it is a FANTASY. only stupid people want those things in real life. i doubt real life pedophiles, sociopath, psychopath or whatever -path like to read manga.
there is rape happening in every corner of the earth in real life have you ever thought of that ? reality is a cruel thing in life with rape murder trauma scars and no happy ending at all dude .....Yaoi is fiction with flash of reality but with a happy fucking ending unlike reality and yaoi is not filled with just rape there are pretty sweet romantic ones too we all have some dark desires that can be sated with yaoi when i was feeling down ameiro paradox helped me see my dark life in flashy colors even if it has some twisted sick story's everyone has their own preference or tendencies or whatever they call it just search for yours and quit bitching about it cuz if you don't like rape yaoi then i don't like tragedy but hey everyone dies and that's why i completely avoid reading tragedy related manga
I kinda get it, I've been there. A few years ago I was a fucking fujoshi and all I read was yaoi and I fangirled a lot, but once you think about it you realise yaoi mangas are usually full of shit and rape and unhealthy relationships and it's awful. I still read yaoi, hell just now I've read a manga in which one guy raped his childhood friend and a few days later he was like "shit, maybe he's mad, I'll apologise" and he does so and the other one is like it's nothing I'm glad we're okay now wtf that's fucked up. One of the mangas I loved a few years ago was Hidoku Shinaide and I was like 'omg they're so cute and so in love' but Maya rapes Nemu several times and in recent chapters he was like "omg I raped Nemu" and I thought finally, but then they talk about it and NEmu goes like "I forgot about it a long time ago, there's nothing to forgive". And I don't see comments talking about that kind of stuff I just read omg the seme was so hot and omg the uke... And this isn't don't like it, don't read it, way too many people romanticize this kind of things and that's fucked up, most of the relationship in yaoi manga are abusive and people need to understand that. And when I read the comments or see how many stars certain mangas have my heart breaks and I'm glad I stopped reading that kind of stuff because it's really fucked up.
