And some people, though good, don't leave situations like that because they are afraid the abuse will worsen after they're gone. And her plan of leaving everything after a year is also dumb. Like She will be nice to the kid, become his greatest support only to leave him with even bigger trauma after a year.

Ah, yes. I see the "Duke hates women/is impotent" so often as a cover for these stories so I didn’t look too deep into it. But he didn’t sign anything and she guaranteed to take care of the spy for him so he has the time for the background check. That's easily a situation of "If it's not in writing, it didn't happen." I just thought he was being...capricious? Flippant? He's bored but doesn't want a ton of women fawning over his status. And now, he has a bit of entertainment.

I definitely agree with the leaving the kid after a year part. She could be kind to him up until the Duke officially adopts him and it would hurt to see her leave. I know she knows he is better off with the Duke but she has changed the directory of the story and can continue to be nice to him as long as the kid wants. I just don’t believe with this kind of story that she will actually be able to do that. "Something" will come up to change that plan.
