It's just a nightmare that they both share. If you read the first chapter again, guards came into his house and tried to detain him in prison but he refused. So this is a "what if" situation, where MC agreed to be sent to prison, and ML followed him. They've been in prison long enough for MC to look at his wife in a new light, as ML was the only one who didn't abandon him. In the end, they still got killed by either the 1st or 4th prince's people. And then they woke up.

They did get a good ending though? They even raise 2 children together? I know the translation is bad so you might've missed it.
