I feel the same. That's why this couple is so interesting. They have such an abusive relationship but you just know, as the reader, that there's some love in them. It's just buried beneath pride, amusement, the game, etc. I feel they both know each other's feelings, but they're just heavily influenced by their roles in the caste game.
As much as i hate forced sex or rape , i just can not bring myself to dislike Karino. Cos it feels though Azusa and his relationship is based on force , they do connect emotionally, As much as Azusa denies it , it feels he still keeps coming back to Karino. Well there is emotional abuse angle also but sometimes we humans behave in certain manner where categorizing behavior as rape or abuse becomes difficult
