As I understand it, after his first life’s sins of mass murder, he got the chance to redo instead of being punished. So instead of burning in hell and tormention, he gets a redo to do better.

while i understand that he took a chunk of 'sin' from his ml to repent with him it doesnt explain or excuse humans i.e. not god treating like him dying was his choice and so he offed all the people that the emperor did
