I think griffins are supposed to be able to peer into hearts. Hachi was feeling jealous and hurting over the thought that Takuma was in love with Roku and that he could never replace Roku. The negative emotions woke the griffin up and caused it to attack.
ok but did we ever get an explanation for Hachi’s birthmark? Why did things go weird when he went near the griffin??
