She was an orphan on the streets, her teacher brought her in and taught her magic (clearly he’s not a good guy but she’s grateful so whatever), something happens (he probably abandoned her), she decides to create a place for magic users to belong but ends up isolating herself and neglecting everyone so they abandon and backstab her, she gets reincarnated into this baby we see now.

Oh him. That’s just another experiment that escaped and came to her because that other little kid (his leader) told him to. And all the little kids plan to band together and get revenge with mc at the lead since technically it’s her fault, she’s would be the strongest once she gets her powers back, etc. So he’s her “guard” and is able to kill creatures and extract dark magic and give it to her.
Ok but those are just spoilers. As far as we know he's some new guy who came as a guard and wasn't able to use his magic until she allowed it. It's way less confusing if you read the Official Translation
