Makoto says this in the end “I can say this for certain, he never loved me. Not even for an instant.” I think that J may have respected and cared for Makoto, and even admitted that he heared him, but it seems certain that J was only ever in love with his master, Wald. Makoto admitted that J would have his heart forever, so Makoto’s obsession and love for J will continue until someone can become more powerful than him and say his name. So, that is how the cycle continues. Which is why Fjord, at the end, says love is the only thing that can kill a demon.

This is from my own pov but i believe the reason why J begone was because that what he has been wanting for centuries. He been living alone holding this lonely feeling of hoping someone would surpass him to the point he want to become a nobody so he could be forgotten, but he is egoistical, proud to be exact since he was raised by his beloved, he shall not fall too lowly. Until we have M who loved him dearly. When the day he falls under M, you could see him sympathise with M’s loneliness but again i shall say this, he did not love M as he used past tense in his word of loved. This could be a decision he took after knowing M would take him down at that moment as he loved M but not to be his ruin, he shall ceased himself by calling M’s name after confirming M’s feeling for eternity by sealing a pact. Yes, J is still cruel as he should as a demon until the very end. To simply romanticise this situation, it also could be why he did that, to not let the both of them befall of the terror of love, which is a ruin for demon. But to say it in cruel reality, it was because J is a selfish demon he just want to free himself by using M who had surpassed him, and trapped M in a hell he once gone through.

Yes, the moment S&D have currently also wasn’t for free, they both have sacrifices done but at least they both found a place they fully content to. Unlike J and M who are the most supreme demon, they would never falls so lowly. It sadden me because of how cruel this is, the feeling of trapped in love you couldn’t have and had to live your life in longing to have someone taking you down… but it simply goes well with this manga right?
