I don't think readers have any problem with mc. They just think he is just to naive and vulnerable, and that's what makes readers frustrated. But are okay with a manipulator who manipulating mc psychologically & emotionally and isolating him from rest of his friends. He even want to control his decision. To me both a rapist and a manipulator are same. One does it physically and other does it mentally.

Why people find big issue with this story of mc blushing over little advances made by his crush, where as they are ok with other stories with rape and abuse? Whats wrong in him blushing or having feelings for him? Most people in love wont easily give up on the love interest no matter what, and here the other guy is really caring and being nice to him too so how u all think its easy for him to give up? You all find rape and abuse stories better than this?
