I finished reading the whole novel (starting off from Chapter 27 of the manhwa in the novel) and I must say, the manhwa has a lot of things missing from the Emperor's perspective or rather his thoughts and regrets.
As a mini recap, in Chapter 27 of the manwha, we see that the Emperor asks his servant how Etienne is doing after the pheromone shock incident and completely moves on when he hears he's fine. He then asks how Rishar is faring with the rumours.
In the novel, instead of moving on quickly, there was a little detail where he brightened up when hearing Etienne was doing fine It was honestly mind-blowing when I saw that.
After hearing how Rishar is faring, the Emperor does not immediately run into Etienne. Instead, he reminisced about his past and we got to see a bit of information about him.
Now this paragraph is a spoiler as it is not shown in the manhwa as of yet (Not sure if it's going to be removed or shown differently). In the manhwa we already know that when the Emperor got engaged (or before, don't really remember), he rejected the Empress of any notions they would have a child because he loved someone else. Well, this might be cliche, but in the novel, when he reminisces about the past, we learn that he actually had an unrequited love for Rishar's mother. Rishar's mother, Meriel who was a commoner omega, was, of course, engaged with Rishar's father, the Archduke. Seeing that, the Emperor did not forcefully or verbally express his feelings to Meriel but rather he wanted Meriel's happiness in the distance. He had a good friendship with the Archduke, so he didn't mind that Meriel was with the Archduke instead. Until one day, the Archduke got into an accident and died. After that Meriel got extremely ill and bedridden due to the imprint they had. It is said that when an Alpha and Omega imprints each other, not only are their pheromones not fully able to be smelt by others, but they also bind each other's souls together. That is why Meriel got ill and eventually died a week later, leaving behind their child, Rishar. Seeing this, the Emperor felt the obligation to take in Rishar and give him the support he needed. Though he should have also done that with Etienne !!
After reminiscing about the past, he then thinks about Etienne and how he feels regretful for not taking care of him as a child. How he saw Etienne as the Empress's child and not his own. After berating himself, Etienne then runs into the Emperor.
In the manhwa, it shows that the Emperor upon seeing Etienne, asks about how he is doing and he also notices the wound on Etienne's hand but doesn't point it out until the next chapter because Etienne gets straight into business...
But ... In the novel, when the Emperor saw Etienne formally addressing the Emperor, he acted awkward and said there was no need for formalities or whatnot. Then he noticed the wound on Etienne and immediately addressed it! Etienne then says, "It's no big deal" but the Emperor doesn't believe him and immediately calls the imperial doctor to treat his wound !! Like the difference is unreal.
The Emperor, after requesting the imperial doctor, offered Etienne to sit down on the bench and then the imperial doctor arrived straight after. The imperial doctor treats his wound and the Emperor asks if it will scar his hand and fortunately, he says it won't. The Emperor seemed relieved and then dismissed the imperial doctor and immediately asked Etienne if it hurt .
He then asks what happened and Etienne hesitates to say what happened. Seeing that the Emperor realises it might have been the Empress's doing as Etienne was coming from the Empress's palace. Etienne immediately dismisses that idea and says a vase just fell and he got caught in it. The Emperor doesn't say anything to that but that didn't mean he believed Etienne's words. He had suspicions of the Empress's abuse from that point on. The Emperor had stiffened his expression upon thinking that and Etienne misunderstood that expression, immediately apologising for collapsing in front of Rishar. The Emperor immediately disagrees and says he did nothing wrong but Etienne asks "Is that not why you had a bad expression?". The Emperor was speechless at his words and Etienne took that silence as affirmation and continued to speak as in the manhwa. Etienne tells him about the Empress's plot to dirty Rishar's reputation and the Emperor immediately trusts him.
If you don't remember, in the manhwa, however, the Emperor was more agitated when he heard about the Empress's plot. Also, another thing is that Etienne explains more about the incident than in the novel. He says how Rishar did nothing wrong and how he trusts the Emperor to protect Rishar because Rishar won't do anything. I see that in the manhwa, it tended to focus on how the Emperor favoured Rishar seeing how the conversation tilted to him but in the novel, Rishar was barely mentioned in their interaction.
In the novel, Etienne, instead of explaining how Rishar didn't do anything to harm him, says that he will be staying at a villa to recuperate from the incident. The Emperor then immediately affirms that he should and Etienne is shocked at how easily the Emperor is trusting his words. Etienne then gets up from his seat and tries to dismiss himself. The Emperor regretfully asks him if he could just stay to have some tea and then leave but Etienne rejects him. Etienne turns around to leave but the Emperor instinctively opens his mouth to call out Etienne and Etienne turns around to ask, "Do you have something else to say?". The Emperor was momentarily surprised that he called Etienne out but then he found words to say. He APOLOGISES!!! No kidding !!!
The Emperor literally apologises and tells Etienne he is sorry for neglecting him. He even deeply bowed and apologised AGAIN!! He told Etienne that he didn't have to forgive him and the Emperor just wanted to apologise properly to him. However, Etienne immediately cut him off midway through his words, which was not surprising because only now he apologises but it's still better than how it is in the manhwa...
Etienne expresses how the Emperor doesn't have to apologise to him because he knows how his whole existence is a reminder of the pain and suffering the Emperor went through. The torment of the grape he experienced. Then the Emperor was extremely shocked. Etienne then bitterly thinks about how the Emperor apologised too late. He apologised when he finally gave up all his expectations Etienne, again, reaffirms his words and says, "That means I know how I was born.". The Emperor was extremely shaken up because he didn't think that Etienne knew how he was born. Apparently, the Emperor ordered everyone, who knew about the incident, to be quiet and not say a word of it because he was so ashamed of it. He wanted to forget about the incident and pretend like it never existed so he was startled when Etienne brought it up.
The Emperor questions how Etienne knew about it and Etienne answers that the Empress indirectly told him about it, not because she trusts him but because she doesn't think anything of him. He only knew because she was talking to her father (?) about it. Etienne then tells the Emperor, that when he learnt about it, he threw away any feeling of resentment or disappointment to his father because he didn't deserve to feel that way. Etienne felt guilty for existing ... He then says, "How could I, who is the only evidence of that day that left Father with scars, dare to hope for your love?”.
The Emperor was purely speechless at Etienne's self-deprecating words and immediately spoke words of denial. He couldn't think of what to say because every word Etienne said had pierced his heart with sorrow. The Emperor tried to say that it was Etienne's fault but his own but Etienne immediately cut him off and said he didn't need to apologise to him. Then he says that because their goals align (about Rishar), they should just cooperate and maintain this certain distance in their relationship. Etienne then dismisses himself and the Emperor tries to stop him but Etienne already goes and leaves. The Emperor felt extremely helpless. He knew he should run to him and tell him it was all his fault for being a useless father but he couldn't open his mouth. It said that he felt extreme guilt afterwards.
Throughout the novel, you can see that the Emperor gets better and heals from his wounds from the grape incident. He gains more courage and is eventually able to confront the Empress for Etienne which is so moving He apologises a lot to Etienne and gradually tries to treat Etienne better than before.
dude this is so moving, im tearing up. i take back all my words about the emperor being trash. i see its my ignorance and empress thats trash, but also my prejudice. knowing how the emperor truly is in the novel can give me clarity in future chapters. tho i srsly hope the manhwa would follow novel emperor and not this frustrating of a father. theres still hope.
Oh my goodness. You explained this so much better than I could have. I came back today and saw there were 10 replies and I was like what happened!? But yess, that's why I was upset how much it differed for the emperor cause he does try. Might be a little too late or not (haven't finished yet) but at least show the growth.
Dang... they're going hard on the no redemption arc for the emperor in the webtoon. Everytime I read a new chapter with the emperor in it, I'm upset since it is different from the novel
