here oxford learner's dictionary " [uncountable] dark make-up used in the past by white actors to make their skin look dark. Using blackface is now considered highly offensive.
" i dont think the definition here fits, shes not white and author didnt do it with offensive purposes, what differs form black style and black face is whether its offensive or not so u cant just claim its black face, its not just they wore black make up portrayed as black, and this actually comes from american, as well as african american history. with many documentaries, not just oxford to back it up. and as obvious as it yumeko aint white also its supposed to portray the beauty of the features not makeup itself
there's a black person's face and "blackface" honestly, its more disrespecting of you calling it black face, and denounces the portrayal of beauty the author is trying to portray.
also i read ur og comment and if u understand author's tryna portray different beauty standards whats got u so confused with the outfits!!? lowkey i think its also a style of covers they do for manga with mainly seinen / shoujo / josei manga that tie into slice of life genres. havent seen it done too often in manhuas, webtoons, and manhwas.
i dont think the fact that shes not white matters, because she had light skin and she isnt black, nor does she have black features. the reason why they specifically said white actors is because, as you said, blackface came from America, so there isnt really any Japanese people doing blackface (also because there wasn't really any black people in japan at that time). that doesn't mean that if a Japanese person does blackface without knowing the connotations of it, that it doesn't count, because it still does. that also doesn't denote the definition, because you cant say "because shes japanese, and not American, the actual definition, which is that blackface doesn't specifically need to be mocking to be blackface, isnt valid" because those the first doesn't disprove the second.
i genuinely don't understand why you think its disrespectful to call it blackface (which is what it is), since this isnt good representation. putting black features on your not-black character isnt good representation for a black person. that's literally just putting black features onto a Japanese person. it does nothing. its not the revolutionary art piece that you're portraying it to be
im so confused because is the picture of her in different hair and outfits at the beginning of every chapter the mc? if so what is up with chapter 8????????? no because I'm not even joking but is she doing blackface
