"Insufficient data" but I have a theory based on the raws and what someone posted about having read them in Spanish. Spoilerish.

So, Moritat seems to be some sort of VR program or way to link people's brains into alternate reality a la The Matrix. Jesse did design it and he wanted to beta test in on himself, but Law insisted both of them test it together. Somehow (and Law may still be behind this) Jesse lost his memories when in VR, but Law did not. Naturally, Law started screwing with Jesse (in many ways). Why? I think they will explore that in Act II.

Law knows it isn't real, and he burns his hand every day to remind himself of that (it doesn't hurt). Jesse always felt it was off--tea taste like nothing, the cigarettes don't seem like cigarettes, and then there are all the things he mentioned in the last chapter. Even without his memory, Jesse is using his reasoning to figure out something about what is going on. I think maybe he has to either realize the full truth or "die" to leave the program--but from chpater one, maybe he just respawns in a hospital if he dies without solving the puzzle. In the very last chapter of this act, he will do it (and I am still not sure exactly how that works). Then he will wake up, take the jack/connector out of his head, and confront Law, who faces him smiling. They will have a discussion that will give us some answers, but leave us wanting the second act (I predict).

I still don't know the purpose of the VR--military training, psychological experiment, a type of psychological programming/correction like in Clockwork Orange, entertainment, or something else. I don't think Jesse is actually sick (unless you mean twisted, and then I think both of them are). I don't think we'll get the answers about who they are in real life until the next series--but I believe there is some reason why Law wanted to mess up Jesse in this way. Law seemed to enjoy playing with Jesse but he also wanted to gain Jesse's trust and love--probably because that is tied to some other objective.

Wow, that makes sense. And I knew it! Law burning his hands is some kinda of totem a la Inception (⌒▽⌒) I also can't help but think that "Moritat" is an anagram of something, I just can't pinpoint what of.

Man, and they say yaoi has "no peak, no fall, no meaning". Clearly they haven't read this particular story ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

There was a Facebook link down there somewhere. I didn't save it because Facebook wouldn't let me view it. Sorry.

I am glad you like my theories. Moritat is actually word in German meaning murder ballad. It is probably a reference to "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer" or the Ballad of Mack the Knife which is a song from Three Penny Opera. The original German version is darker than the one English speakers are familiar with, including verses about rape and arson. It's one reason I believe Jessie may not always be a nice person either.

Ah I see. That somehow makes things a bit clearer to me. But why would he call an invention that is touted to be of help a "murder ballad"? And you are very knowledgeable (☆▽☆)

I just like stories. Ask me about football and I'm clueless. But you ask a good question--the name isn't about rainbows and puppies, is it?
