The novel is a bit clearer, essentially he was injected with a drug that makes him loose the ability to guide (ordinary person) he made himself overdose on stimulants to try and keep his guide ability for longer while they fought their way out. He didnt want to tell Mosheli (the Emperor dude) and tried to hide it, but when he asked where the dragon was (because he's an ordinary person now and they can't see the spiritual companions) that's how Mosheli connected the dots and found out that he's now an ordinary person
