I think he is more self hate. From the spoilers I think he blames that place for destroying his mom. He thought he couldn't make someone from stern happy and doesn't want to make her go through what his mom did. But she is a BAMF this life so he is worrying about the wrong thing.
I don't like how everyone, even her own son keeps saying wht the late empress brought upon them....like wth. She didn't do anything! Y'all bullied her !
