Because usually girls (depending on the girl) in shoujo/josei are usually annoying and irritating to a point that you can't take it anymore. They would do stupid reckless stuff without realizing what they're doing and have some guy come to save them. As for yaoi, ukes tend to be less irritating (depending on the uke) than the girls are. At least in yaoi, 2 guys tend to have mutual relationships than the boy/girl relationships.
Not really answering your questions, but I thought this article was very interesting

My darling, you have answered your own question in your "broader perspective" and I applaud you for being so self aware about your own reading needs. You are exactly right that these things are a large part of the appeal of yaoi for female readers. I would only add that by eliminating the female character in the romantic/sexual relationship, yaoi provides a safe place for women to explore their own thoughts and feelings about sex and relationships without the oppressive gender baggage loaded onto them by the society in which they live.
i would also add that i don't like dealing with gender power imbalance in romantic fiction. like, when i read shoujo or whatever, some part of my mind is always examining how women are portrayed and critically analyzing everything. when i'm reading yaoi or slash fiction, however, my mind just relaxes. i don't have to feel on guard about the author doing a disservice to women - which is a big deal to me.
so basically, i only read 'straight' romance when i know that the author can be trusted to make women the complex and interesting characters that we know we are irl.
I totally agree with you
Female characters being weepy and obnoxious doesn't bother me NEARLY as much as the ones who also bring some "stepford wife" vibes into it. Like itazura na kiss she wants to be a nurse so she can support her husband, a doctor, with his work. Makes me cringe so bad. That's the kinda thing that bothers me, and you see it quite a bit in shoujo. And some of the smut shoujo like Kaiken Phrase, it bothers me a lot. There are quite a few shoujo with good female characters, you just have to dig and read a lot of...bleh...ones. But I love digging for treasures, so :D Although I haven't been reading manga nearly as long as many of you, so I haven't read as much.
Girls that cry don't bother me much, a lot of times they cry over stuff that would make me cry ;) I remember at like 18 being heartbroken and sobbing the whole drive home from church, cause I was playing piano to show off to the boy I liked, and he used my playing to sing, and show off, to the girl HE liked.
Yaoi also often provides an instant gratification, the romance is usually slower, a lot of shoujo drags on the romance. Now I love a good, slow burn...but its nice to have faster romance sometimes.
why do so many girls like yaoi?
i'm a fujoshi, but sometimes i wonder how i would answer someone if they asked, why as a girl i like yaoi.
on a broader perspective, i started with shoujo but grew out of it. i think as i got older i was craving something more than sweet, adolescent stories of first kisses and holding hands, but the majority of mature romances or hentais focused purely on sex and seem to be targeted more towards guys. yaoi on the other hand seem to be more targeted towards girls. it has sex "and" feely plot lines of which sometimes the angsty plot is more important. and i guess seeing two guys make out just seems hotter than seeing a girl treated as a sex object.
but really i think i just like seeing angsty plot lines that let me escape from reality. and seeing a girl cry and worry about romances that i don't care about doesn't really do that for me.
so why do you like yaoi?
