In PLato'a Allegory of the Cave, there is a prisoner who has been in the cave his entire life. He is facing the cave wall with a fire behind him, so that he sees shadows. Everyday, people from the village walk on a bridge in the cave, and in turn, the objects they carry are reflected onto the prisoner's cave wall because of the fire.
The prisoner is not able to see the people, but he sees the objects they carry. He is also able to hear some conversations, and because of this, he believes those objects are talking. His "truth" of the world are the shadows on the cave wall. Plato argues that we essentially are also stuck in the cave because we believe the reality presented in front of us. our lives, our world, are our caves. And until we can get out of the cave and see new truths, we will never be enlightened because we will always just be looking at the shadows of the truth.
This fits into the story so well because Jesse is the prisoner and Law is feeding him the truth. Jesse, like the prisoner in the cave, doesn't know any better because the "truth" that Law tells him is all he knows. He is also only seeing the shadows of the truth because he is trapped in the cave.
Hope that helps!
Allegory of the Cave was written by Plato. So what happens is that there are 3 prisoners who were born and lived in a cave there whole life. All they ever see are shadows, so they believe that shadows are the actual objects, and that shadows are what's 'real.' But one day, one prisoner escaped the cave and red for the first time ever, he goes outside. He sees the grass, trees, sky, and rudd finally the sun. At first, he is bewildered and can't believe what he sees. Once he takes everything in, he goes back into the cave and tells the other 2 prisoners what he saw. The prisoners mock him and think he is crazy, because all they have ever known are the shadows on the wall. They REFUSE to even believe it.
So the theme of the story is that there is truth that we don't know of, and that we purposely refuse to believe it because it contradicts what we already thought was the truth. In Moritat, Jesse is being told all these things that he doesn't want to believe, yet may be true anyways.
I hope this makes sense!
The Metaphor of the Sun
1. Just as it is by the light of the sun that the visible is made apparent to the eye, so it is by the light of truth and being – in contrast to the twilight of becoming and perishing – that the nature of reality is made apprehensible to the soul.
2. Just as light and sight may be said to be like the sun, and yet not to be the sun, so science and truth may be said to be like the Good, and yet not to be the Good; it is by the sun that there is light and sight, and it is by the Good that there is science and truth.
3. Just as the sun is the author of nourishment and generation, so the Good is the author of being and essence. Thus, the Good is beyond being, and the cause of all existence.
Guys, you need to read about Plato's metaphor of the sun (from Plato's cave). Law is reading about this in more than one chapter. I think it will give you some hints about his motives :)
