i think the author knows exactly what she did here yall. you guys are like "hmm the way the characters were talking about the trans girl at the beginning was kinda iffy" when that's... actually the point. you think a different conversation between those guys would've been more realistic? lmao. they're our characters, yes, but clearly they aren't in touch with trans people and their experiences, so among themselves they will speak on them in whichever way is natural to them. they're wrong, yes, but it's kinda naive to think those conversations don't happen CONSTANTLY irl, especially among even men in that kind of environment

and criticizing the author for portraying this aspect of reality is stupid to be honest. since when does an author have to agree with their own character's behavior to write about it? that's not how stories are made

I agree with your take — I honestly think that it adds to the characterization of the cast. These two men are introduced to us as well meaning guys — a dad that’s working for his daughter and a dude that takes care of his bf’s mom — but also they’re still regular ass men who don’t really know a lot about social issues. We know they’re not bad people, but even decent folk end up saying ignorant things they don’t really mean or even understand were wrong. I like honesty like how the author handled characters like that.
