I don't think ML and the friend had any issue before. It just that the ML has a bad reputation to begin with, and now stealing his friend all the time

Agree. He also spread rumors about ML while he's not sure himself if they're false or true. I wonder if himself doesn't make some of these rumors. Anyway, it's so low of him talking like that about someone he doesn't know personally.
