If the horse was left there like that it was going to be really painfull to wait out and die so he killed him quicker to make it less painful

There was literally nothing else he could do??? How else would you mercy kill a horse if not quick and painlessly? It would have been merciless of him to just leave the horse there slowly dying alone from all the blood loss.

His horse got shot by the other guys and was down, there's no way anyone could've helped the horse in the middle of nowhere. The best thing he could've done was to put it out of its misery which he did, letting it wither in pain until it dies on its own would've been cruel.
