I can see how it may be odd but I’ll just clarify some info to help anyone understand how the family ties are:

So the guy who’s the new dad has a distant relative. ML is the son of that distant relative. The stepdad is had already planned to marry the FL’s mom but only recently the ML was basically dropped off at his doorstep. The stepdad basically doesn’t consider the ML as his son at all and he actually wanted to reject taking the ML in due to wanting to marry the FL’s mom. However the FL’s mom was the one who heard the news and suggested that it would be okay for the ML to move in with them and act like a family. They aren’t really lawfully related and since it’s a distant relative the blood ties are weak. And the stepdad is really only considering the FL as his new daughter, not the ML

The better way of thinking of the ML is a guy who is just being taken care of because he has no where else to go. The mom was kind enough to accept him into their house.
