Dan is a fixer who is compassionate toward anyone who does something for him. he’s indebted to jaekyung and, despite the borderline abuse, he feels that jaekyung must be a good person inside to go out of his way for him. on the surface, Dan is aware that Jaekyung’s attitude toward him is unacceptable, but he also reminds himself constantly that he’s responsible for the situation (even if he was gaslit into believing it since Jaekyung became his lender without consent). he also feels it’s his mission and proof that he’s a competent pt to keep Jaekyung in good shape. adding to that tangled mess is the sexual aspect of their relationship. he’s never had time/energy/interest in love or relationships before Jaekyung took his virginity in several ways. Jaekyung is also becoming increasingly more attuned to Dan’s reactions by adding little touches of what Dan thinks might be affection. Jaekyung encourages these thoughts by praising him when their sexual chemistry aligns, and Dan isn’t used to praise. In fact, most of the time, Dan rejects praise because he feels he doesn’t deserve it, thinking he could do more. but that’s not the case with jaekyung because Jaekyung rarely gives praise and seems to only give it at the most embarrassing times, when Dan either can’t reject it because he’s preoccupied or because the action being praised is baffling.

Dan was attracted to jaekyung from the start: his body, his success, his motivation. in a way, he’s envious of what Jaekyung has accomplished on his own from his own strengths, regardless of where he may have started in life. he hopes that, by helping jaekyung, putting all his effort into helping maintain his success, he too will become successful enough to take care of his grandmother on his own. he lives and breathes jaekyung and no one else knows his shameful past nor his shameful present but he trusts that Jaekyung won’t get rid of him because of their contract. because of the contract, he’s tied to jaekyung for an indefinite amount of time and, with even just the bit of recognition of his skills (his cooking, his massages) or a smidge of respect (medical advice), he feels the gap between them closing.

Despite the field of red flags, he feels that Jaekyung is his road to redemption. the journey is bumpy but it will keep him and his grandmother alive, and that is his life goal.
