Wow, China is just... man I really like their culture. And the food is phenomenal. But the government has always been ÜBER fucked up. Do you know what Sinocentrism is?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinocentrism
It's basically the doctrine that China (the Han Chinese to be specific) is the center of the world. That everybody else gotta bow down to their suitpants cause the Han Chinese is da boss of human civilization! That the Han Chinese are superior in every way. It's weird but that's how they justified keeping their neighbors as vassal states and why they ABSOLUTELY CAN'T FUCKING TOLERATE any foreign power impinging on their sovereignty. Technically, this belief was phased out when China got their ass handed to them when they encountered European colonials and the devastating events surrounding the Rape of Nanking (Japanese invasion). But this notion is still a quite important underpinning/precursor to how the current government and thinking patterns of Chinese citizens operate. They call it like national pride, but outsiders call it being huge pricks who can't stand any kind of loss of "face" of their national dignity. For instance, the existence of Hong Kong makes China infuriated because it was taken by the British due to the fucked up Opium Wars. Which is the main reason why they like to punish Hong Kong citizens when they try to protest or write articles as journalists on politically sensitive topics, aside from the fact that having certain freedoms (freedom of speech and more) is anathema to their current government's moral convictions and laws.
I'm not trying to defend the other types of ethnocentrism like what Europeans have, but I always feel like Sinocentrism was and remains a kind of warped and extreme way of thinking. Because that way of thinking can lead to a lot of messy justifications for doing all sorts of manipulative and dictatorship-style shit to both their own citizens, contested territories, and foreign countries.
Anyway, I can never agree with so many things that fucked up regime does to their citizens, especially religious/ethnic minorities. I'm not saying that other countries don't do some similar fucked up shit, but China certainly is like this toxic poster child of suppressing the human imagination and controlling thoughts via censorship and other violations of basic human rights and dignity. I mean, if I want to be honest, there are a ton of fucked up things that go on in my own country (USA) like the gun and drug/tobacco lobbyists or the law about the right to bear arms (which is just getting totally abused and the original founders who wrote the constitution would have been alarmed at all the gun violence that goes on now). And the US has long held a policy of suppressing and exterminating the culture of Native Americans, as well as using the legal system to aid white people with money and not all citizens. I'm not trying to target just China, there's no perfect government. But I feel bad for creative types and the LGBTQ community in China, and even for those poor actors that can't work as actors if they are considered too "feminine". Or the actors that make gaffs about political controversies and become banned. And the screenwriters/directors who can't have their work broadcast because of the extreme regulations that the government must approve everything or else it can't be shown to the Chinese public. Lastly, all those manhua artists who can't publish anything BL with actual smut! It's such a shame!
