He chopped off the infected arm so it wouldn't spread and 'saved' him. Although he probably whished he died instead

In a earlier panel a radio mentions that if you cut off the bitten/infected area fast enough before it spreads you’ll be ok and once I saw that I knew it was gonna be foreshadowing in some way
