The translator keeps the historical way of speaking which truly enhances this story. Plus, you can increase your vocabulary a great deal as these old fashioned insults packed quite a punch. Sounder of swine, indeed!

I agree with the first part. But u can’t use such old-fashioned words in everyday conversation

I agree with the fun part of learning new words, but I didn't think koreans would speak Shakespearean english in Josean times....I think it should be toned down a little bit. Not every international fan is fluent in english enough to understand such complicated words.

This is the Joseon era where the royal members and other court officials, servants etc didn't talk casually like how modern korean people do. There is a hierarchy here where the people in the lower rung try to butter up those in the upper rungs by fancy words or how some use eloquent wording as insults. The Shakespearean English was basically to give that nuanced historical vibe to these characters

Again I understand that, but is it really easy to read now? So a person who can't read it,can they really enjoy it? No... therefore easy solution: Tone the english a tad bit. I enjoy the level of english they use in Painter of the night, just enough for nuance but not to stray in literal shakesperean.

why should the english version be 'toned down' to fit non-native speakers? sure english is an international language, but it's also still a normal language, if i go and buy and read an english translation, i expect it to be a well done and fitting translation and not dumbed down to fit b1 standards. you wouldn't ask for the korean version to use easier language so people learning korean can understand it either, would you?

also, this is far from shakespearean english, more like jane austen. nor does the argument work if we consider that students read shakespeare in school while learning english as a foreign language, so they can do it (and one can also enjoy reading it) ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

As a native english speaker I say that english first and foremost should be easy for everyone to enjoy. Not to mention that this is a WEBTOON not an american marvel comic,so really the usage of such english is fun and sweet but very unnecessary though I enjoy it. Plus why should we call it dumbed down? Literally no one and I repeat no one, even native speakers are not more than C1 level...And this level of speech is way harder than that...We read Shakesperean tales of course, but most of the time it gets tiresome even for natives. But since they are people who enjoy there could have been 2 versions made. Just because someone finds it easy to understand and enjoyable, doesnt mean that the others have to read it while googling and scrolling through pictures everytime, since the plot and the manga becomes a homework at that point.

Also this webtoon isn't made for a targeted audience, but for everyone and we know that everyone has a different level of english comprehension skills...So just because someone has better understanding and/or gifted will skills to know many languages perfectly doesn't mean that the rest need to learn it up to that level. Also you mentioned the korean translations if they are difficult? Ofcourse they would be,as that is it's native languange where the values of the era portrayed can flourish, but no non native speaker is reading the korean is it? No..bcs everyone comes to read the english version since not everyone even knows korean. That doesn't mean that bcs they don't know, they can't read in another language they know.

you can't please everyone. making it easier also means being less close to the original korean and less fitting, on top of also being more boring. if you are a native speaker and you enjoy this version, i don't even see your point

the story itself is obviously targeted to an audience (BL, smut, joseon time, way smaller target group than marvel lol) but that aside an english translation is obviously for people speaking english. so if people have a lack of skills they can either hope for another translation into a language they speak better OR to work on their english, changing the english to fit them is not a solution because even if you change it to more modern english, some people may not understand that either because their skills are A1, while you at the same time make it less enjoyable for all the people who want to read an accurate and well written translation (which i would argue are way more than beginners expecting stuff to be toned down to their level), if you want to enjoy an english medium you have to work on your english one way or the other, don't be lazy ppl

if people lose interest in the story because they have to look up a few words the problem is with them, since this is the language the comic uses in the original, and if they dislike that language they dislike part of the comic, just like a gaming webtoon may use gaming terms, older expressions are part of a historical setting. if you dislike that, you dislike the og too, which is fine but has nothing to do with the translation

(and of course tons of people study korean and may seek out the og, just because english is a world language doesn't mean that english translations should be simplified for beginners when no other language does that, 2 versions sounds nice but is not feasible time and effort wise, unless you want to pay double for each version)

we can agree to disagree though, i think people using their brains while reading ain't the end of the world lol ( ̄∇ ̄")

True though it would be nice if people took the effort but after some comments I have read in other sites too of people complaining about this it just makes me sad that this is a problem. If only it could be affordable to make 2 versions, because I really want my languange or more correctly our languange to be more inclusive and like this well it might take some time for others to translate with the help of a scanlation team and be a sneaky little pirate about it and upload it for others to enjoy too. It still would only hurt the author in a way though...So there is a way I guess ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
