This could be a theory, but toys can be also used to feel control. I don't think JK was shopping for toys thinking "Aw, I want to make Dan feel good" but rather "This is going to teach him a lesson". I think this is some progress in a weird way. Like if you think about it, he got the toy even tho the whole point of it is to pleasure the other person and not himself, so in a way, he wants Dan to feel good like how he got off to Dan feeling good on the couch in that one scene when he played with his nips for the first time.
