In olden times, to make the color gold or heavily pigmented colors(like green or purple) the dye used dangerous chemicals that were toxic to humans. It's probably b/c the mistresses older sister was the MC's father's previous lover(who is dead). I heard a small spoiler that it's the mistresses way to screw him over b/c he technically got her older sister unalived.
