The MC was trying to get to the cassette recorder without making Doha notice its importance, he was talking about how it's a save point (it's usual for these kinds of games to have a save point so that the player doesn't lose much progress)
Doha did notice it tho you can see how he looks back at the recorder and while the MC got killed Doha wasn't shown so he probably "saved" as well, that's why he probably still has his memories in the new game
I also think what tipped him off that the recorder had something special was the way how he dismissed the other cassette he found
