I hear you, but I disagree. It's not that he just doesn't want to be out. He's opening hating on mc for being out. He literally sees it as the inferior option, like being out is bad.
If it was just him with his personal decision then it wouldn't be an issue, but it isn't. He judges others for being out around other people

Sure, but at no point does the narrative frame him as scared or insecure. In fact, he's framed in the right. Hating on him vs hating him for being out are different things and I agree that he doesn't seem to be hating him but he specifically states he dislikes open discussion of gayness. That has never been resolved within the story. He never changes his mind or says 'well, I guess we just have different perspectives on this and they're both fine'. He instead thinks 'well at least he shut up about being gay' and this is never challenged so I actually don't think he's getting better.

No I get it you right I’m not gonna be her cappin and saying I didn’t feel this way too, he did annoy me of how sorta rude he was acting towards mc too just cus he’s more open or outgoing about the relationship
I respect ml cus at the end of the day not everyone who’s gay is gonna feel comfy being open like that. So no hate to him
