I think it's pretty straight forward, not like a metaphor or anything lol
They had like a deal with this "mirror ghost", they can lure victims for the ghost, in exchange, it gives them the powers to make anyone disappear (they were ripped apart first anyway :'>) the story doesn't really go so far to explain why the ghost had deals with them and not other victims, but I guess it's more interesting to leave it ambiguous. I myself believe that the ghost (or a demon) only choses those who have dark souls (like how they decided to just straight up massacre the whole group)
